Which apps read these codes
- PayPal, Venmo and Cash App codes are links: the phone's camera opens the app (or the website) on your page. PayPal and Cash App fill in the amount if you set one; Venmo asks the payer.
- SEPA bank transfer codes follow the European Payments Council standard (also called GiroCode or EPC QR). Most banking apps in the euro area can scan one and fill in the transfer.
- UPI codes work in every UPI app in India: Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM and bank apps.
- Bitcoin and Ethereum codes use the standard payment formats (BIP 21 and EIP-681) that most wallets read.
Safety
A payment code only fills in the details: the payer always sees who they're paying and the amount, and confirms it in their own app. Nothing moves until they do. Before you print, scan the code yourself and check that the name and account are right. Payment details are checked as you type (IBAN checksums, wallet address formats, amounts), but only you can confirm they're yours.
If you print payment codes in public, check now and then that nobody has stuck their own code over yours, a common scam.
Questions
Do you take a fee or see payments?
No. The code just contains your payment details. Payments go directly through the payer's app; we're never involved and can't see them.
Can I change the amount later?
Not in a printed code. Leave the amount empty to let each payer choose, or make a new code.
Are my bank details stored?
No. The code is made by your browser, and nothing you type is sent to us or saved.
